Moving Insurance

There are several aspects regarding insurance in relation to your move. Customers should familiarize themselves with all aspects to make sure you understand how the coverage works, and that your items are covered properly whether you move with us or another company.

General Liability Coverage:

This is the movers’ basic insurance. Moving Ahead carries two million dollars in liability coverage. We also carry workers compensation insurance as well as auto liability coverage as required by law. This general liability coverage covers any damage a mover may cause to your home or apartment; for example a scratched floor, a hole in a wall or a broken stair or step. This liability coverage also covers your items being moved with limited liability coverage. On intrastate moves (moving within NY State) the standard cargo coverage is limited to $.30c per pound per article. On interstate moving (movingfrom one state to another) the standard cargo coverage is limited to $.60c per pound per article. Some movers will lead you to believe this is “full coverage”, when in fact this is very limited coverage. With this coverage a piece that weighs 100 pounds is covered at $30.00 on intrastate moves or $60.00 on interstate moves. If you have a $5,000.00 painting that weighs 10 pounds, this standard cargo coverage would only cover the item at $3.00 on intrastate moves or $6.00 on interstate moves.

Valuation Coverage:

Most movers sell valuation coverage as an option for customers to purchase to cover any damage to items being moved. Moving Ahead only sells full replacement valuation coverage. Some movers will sell depreciated value coverage, which is really a waste of money. Moving Ahead doesn’t even sell depreciated value coverage (yes, it really is that bad). The cost for replacement coverage through Moving Ahead  is $10.00 per $1,000.00 of declared value with a $250.00 deductible. There is a $10,000 minimum purchase ($100.00) and a $50,000 maximum per truck ($500.00).

When purchasing coverage from a mover you are covering one shipment and you must include the full value of all the items being moved in order to be fully covered. If you have $40,000.00 in total value and only take $10,000.00 in coverage, you would only receive 25% on any claim filed.

Other Coverage Options:

Your homeowners’ coverage may include coverage for damage to your household items when being transported by a professional mover however, it may not as well. The best bet is to call your insurance agent and ask specifically if your belongings are covered for damage during a move.

MovingInsurance.com is an outside insurance provider where you can purchase coverage for your move through select movers. In order for a mover to qualify to sell coverage through their program, the mover must have and maintain a 95% or higher claim free ratio. Moving Ahead has a 97.3% claim free ratio and therefore we qualify for their program. Some of the benefits of their coverage include:

  • Low cost coverage that is tailor made for your specific needs.
  • Guaranteed claim resolution within 60 days of the claim being received.
  • Individual item coverage; you select which items to cover without having to include every item in order to be fully covered.
  • Pairs and sets coverage option; you can insure a set of items and if any item in the set is damaged you are compensated for the entire set.
  • Coverage through an independent carrier, not from the movers insurance company.

With MovingInsurance.com, you have the greatest flexibility in terms of coverage options. By purchasing the exact coverage you want and need, you keep the cost low while insuring every item that is important and valuable to you.  Visit www.movinginsurance.com for further details on their coverage.
